Like many of the best vacation spots the Hilton Head area is laden with great local choices for dining. Hilton Head is no slouch with a few of its legendary and iconic local eateries. Based in the low country famous for its delicious southern recipes and seafood dishes, Hilton Head can offer a truly unique dining experience. The best part is like most of the south, they like to make eating an entertainment filled activity as well!
One of the most iconic and locally loved places in Hilton Head has to be the Salty Dog Café! Built around the myth of Jake the Dog who rescued his John Braddocks from a storm at sea by swimming his for three days and nights to safety; this spot has become a cultural landmark for the South East! Located directly on the waterfront The Salty Dog Café is filled not only with an amazing view to dine with but a great vibe as well! Jake the Dog constantly makes appearances for FREE photos, perfect memories of a vacation! Live music and events are a constant especially in the summer months with music ranging from acoustic folk, bluegrass, country, DJs, and even jazz! Not only is there the namesake Café, but a few other options as well; Jake’s Pizza, Land’s End Tavern, and The Wreck of the Salty Dog. Not to mention that the Salty Dog can offer reserved dining for family events! Once you’re done with dinner at one of the handful of great dining options hop on over to the Salty Dog Ice Cream Factory for an amazing sweet treat to end a delicious meal! At the very end of your visit, snag some Salty Dog merch; popular and recognized all over the South East!
Another one of the local legends in the Crazy Crab, an absolutely fantastic place for the family to dine! A local staple for over thirty years (and hopefully another thirty more!) the Crazy Crab has a ton to offer! Not only is their food top notch with freshly prepared seafood, traditional low country recipes, and the best crab legs in Hilton Head having won local awards multiple years in a row; but they provide these along with an absolutely stunning waterfront view in two locations! The Crazy Crab also provides great entertainment for the whole family with onsite playgrounds, the largest saltwater fish tank in Hilton Head (Jarvis Creek Location), and live music all summer long!
Perhaps you want that singular amazing experience. A crown jewel dining experience to really memorialize your vacation. This one is more adult oriented; however, it is truly something that should not be missed. The Jazz Corner, located in The Village at Wexford, is truly an experience that will make for a memorable vacation! Celebrating twenty years of pairing gourmet food with the utmost of sensational entertainment the Jazz Corner will not disappoint. A project of the heart from the late Jazz musician and historian, Bob Masteller, the 99-seat Jazz Corner has become a low country landmark. With a deliciously intimate atmosphere paired with innovative southern and low country flavors; it is the perfect setting and atmosphere to enjoy world class entertainment! Reservations are recommended; however, walk-ins are welcome. It's a perfect capstone to a memorable vacation!

Hilton Head is known for many things, but one of the absolute best is all the water surrounding it! Rivers, creeks, streams, swamps, marshes, and of course where the sun rises every morning; the Atlantic Ocean. Each of these have their own things to excite tourists and provide a wonderful vacation experience. From wonderful wildlife, memory making views, and a chance to experience nature close at hand; all of these great bodies of water Hilton Head has a lot to offer for those looking to explore the aquatic side of a vacation.
Dolphins are a big part of the Hilton Head coastal areas. You can find them just off the beaches swimming in the Atlantic, travelling up into the rivers, or even into some of the bays and estuaries in the area. If you want to see them in the beautiful sunset, then Vagabond Cruise can give you that perfect opportunity! With cruises for this starting at 5:30 pm and the most popular being at 7:30 pm you are in for a ninety-minute narrated cruise lead by the naturalist captain of the Vagabond! As the sun shimmers of the beautiful coastal South Carolina waters dolphins will appear cresting over the waves offering not only a perfect experience for children, but an extremely memorable memory for adults. If perhaps you are not as interested in the sunset tours or more flexibility is needed for the vacation schedule; then the Vagabond also offers more ninety-minute narrated cruises throughout the day!
Maybe you have an open day and have not decided on something to do; or perhaps it is not your first time to the Hilton Head area, and you want something new to add to your vacation. One of the best things to do in that case is to prepare a day trip to Charleston’s sister city; Savannah, Georgia! A cruise, again from our friends at Vagabond Cruises, leaves every Tuesday and Thursday at 9 am! The cruise takes an hour and 45 minutes from Hilton Head to Savannah aboard the Spirit of Harbour Town; a boat with a air conditioned lower deck, a covered upper deck, and a bar for drinks. You may also purchase discounted trolley tickets aboard the boat for the four hour stay. The Spirit of Harbour Town docks right downtown allowing for the perfect point to start the day. Savannah offers amazing dining options, lush botanical gardens, trolley tours, and great local shops making for a packed day of exploration!
At the end of the stay hop right back on the Spirit of Harbour Town for more drinks and a scenic cruise back to Hilton Head! This is the only vessel that offers a day trip to Savannah so make sure to plan early!
If kids are a major part of your vacation, then consider The Black Dagger at Harbour Town. Right before boarding the pirate ship, the crew provide the kids with costume gear, face paint, and temporary tattoos for an awesome pirate look. The kids will also receive their own Pirate name as well as a few pointers on how to walk and talk just like Davy Jones. When ready; climb aboard the ship and set sail for adventure and treasure! To find the treasure, kids will have to read the map and help to defeat Stinky Pete, the rival pirate in the quest for treasure. All of the pirates will get a share of the loot to take home after overcoming Stinky Pete at the end of the adventure!
One of the last things to recommend if you are looking to get deeper into the wonderful nature surrounding the Hilton head areas are kayak tours! Tours leave from the Shelter Cove Marina and last for two hours each, guided by an experienced naturalist! Though the naturalist may be experienced you need not be as the kayaks are beginner friendly and very stable, making this a perfect activity to do with the entire family! Along your guided tour you’ll be led through the stunning and everchanging Hilton Head marshes and estuaries. Along the trip see herons and osprey flying low overhead, skittering critters like fiddler crabs making home among the pluff mud, and even see dolphins feeding in the marshes! The kayak tours are a perfect family or solo adventure to highlight your vacation!
Maybe you're a couple out to relax and have a bit of fun off the resort for your summer vacation. Maybe you’re lucky and have a family member willing to baby sit for a bit of personal vacation time, and you want something to do in the local area. Perhaps you have a kid old enough to take care of themselves and their siblings. We promise we won’t tell, but it’s ok if you are a bit tired of the Disney movies too. Regardless of the circumstances Hilton Head has plenty of adult geared activities to include in a wonderful vacation just for you!
Our first stop in our tour is going to be… a tour! Hilton Head distillery is a staple of the Hilton Head area with their hand-crafted small batch liquors ranging from standard dark and light rums to espresso and coconut flavored liquors. Each small batch is crafted by hand using classic and traditional distillation techniques creatively combined with modern technology. Offering a tasting room (which is family friendly just in case!) with plenty of tasting options as well as tours on the hour every hour there’s a plethora of ways to enjoy some something you won’t find anywhere else. Enjoy a varied tasting menu ranging from six neat samples; cocktails and neat samples; and all cocktails. All tastings are made with the distillery’s own spirits making for a delicious experience. There’s something for everyone’s tastes here!
Next on our stop around Hilton Head is a local classic. Reilley’s Grill & Bar has been a staple of the area since opening as a small pub in 1982. Tom and Diane Reilley moved here those thirty-seven years ago to open up a small pub. Throughout the years Reilley’s has changed staff, new foods, and even a slight location change after a fire; however, it remains family owned and operated to this very day! The first Hilton Head Island St. Patrick’s Day Parade was born here and continues the tradition to this day thirty years later as well as the RMN Matchplay Championship; a golf tournament that donates proceeds to charity! Not only is Reilley’s a great community staple, but they back up their restaurant with wonderful food, televisions to catch your favorite sports, and even live music regularly. All these are great reasons to stop in and have a drink or grab a bite!
Hilton Head has the perfect show for those looking for a laugh and a meal at the Comedy Magic Cabaret! Run by the famous Kerry Pollock with his tagline of “Funny Not Filthy”, this upscale comedy venue has all the makings for a great night out featuring the returning act of Kerry Pollock as well as many other guest acts throughout the week! The cabaret also offers great dining options as well as house specialty cocktails and other alcoholic beverages! Reservations are not required; however, they are recommended due to the limited seating due to the intimate nature of the venue.
Our last stop on the tour around Hilton Head ends with One Hot Mama’s run by Chef Orchid! Recently named a South Carolina Chef Ambassador in 2016, Chef Orchid has one amazing restaurant on her hands! With food ranging from southern classics like BBQ to amazing Chicken Wings there’s something delicious to eat there no matter the time. Happy hour is from 4-7 pm at the bar; the perfect time to come in from the beach and cool off from the heat, and when it gets into the evening the floor opens up for people to go out and dance! One Hot Mama’s has everything you need with delicious food, happy hour drinks, televisions to catch any and all sports, and a space to make your own entertainment!
